Cap It Off

LinkEven though I'm not a huge fan of red, I've always loved this photograph by Slim Aarons. It reminds me of Palm Springs and of my grandparents and their super stylish friends. Instead of beers and brats by the pool as is expected these days, I picture champagne punch and tiny fruit plates. Oh, and swim caps. I mean, who doesn't love a swim cap?? I have a BBQ coming up in a couple weeks...I'll let you know who doesn't love them.

Lovely Living

Think the owners of these homes would mind if I broke in and spent an afternoon lounging in their living space? You know, for research purposes. Er, something.

Easy Breezy

The hunt is on for the perfect sandal as it’s already feeling like spring in my hood. While putting about 113 things in my cart at J.Crew, I decided I would die without this tunic. Then I remembered my belly would prooobably not fit into it until next spring. Bah. So yeah, instead of spending my hard-earned cash on things that would surely make me cry, I thought a board in its honor was in order. Enter the perfectly relaxed living room. Where nothing feels contrived, shoes are never allowed and everyone looks smokin’ hot in that tunic.

The DNA of Good Decor

Okay friends, here it is. The house I grew up in, the space that started it all. I know my parents are going to kill me - for sharing these and for not allowing them to properly stage - but seriously, how could I NOT post pics of their pad?? Please forgive the lighting as clearly these were taken on the, ahem, sly. Oh and the dining area in the kitchen; we'd had a party for my husband's b-day the night before. I can assure you, however, that under normal circumstances you would never find a shoe sitting anywhere but the closet. Anyhoo, my mom is an incredible designer, working once upon a time for John Wheatman, Steve Chase and Arthur Elrod himself (yes, Arthur Elrod of the Lautner house where she spent many moments). Back in the day she helped decorate Farrah's house and Cher's digs, and honed her skills from Palm Springs to San Francisco. I covet everything she's done with this house (and she's done A LOT, trust me) and everything she owns and am honored when she asks for my opinion. Check out her vintage dining table and new chairs from Kartell, for example. Uh, yes please! I keep trying to convince my parents to do a switch...we'll move into their house, they can move into the condo, and all will be right with the world. Hey, you never know! My mom keeps saying we should go into business together...I might just have to take her up on that.

Breathing Room

Though it usually wouldn't be my style, there are so many things I love about this room. Forget the fact that I could live out the rest of my days inside Pieces or Jayson Home & Garden, there's just something peaceful and chic about this space. The classic sofa and vintage rug are a great mix with the industrial(ish) stool and sconce, and well, let's be real - every room is made better with a dash of Anthropologie. Ah, so many rooms, so little time. Now I know how Sultan Brunei must feel. Did you know that guy has 1,788 rooms and 257 bathrooms? He also has a reported harem of well, a lot. Hmmm, maybe his harem is the reason he NEEDS so many rooms. Wow, that gives my statement above a whooooole new meaning. Sorry, tangent, but I'm just sayin'.

Dun, dun, duuun...

The big reveal! Not as exciting as say, the unveiling of Project Runway’s winner, or even the Real Housewives of Jersey reunion (seriously, did you see it? Hot. Mess.), but a big reveal nonetheless. Ugly couch is out and clean-lined classic sofa is in. Pretty much every piece of furniture in the living room is repurposed. We covered the sofa in the underside of a blue linen fabric because the texture rocks, and the club chairs once belonged to my parents. * In fact, there’s white wicker somewhere under the ottoman. Gag. The chair under the window is my fave, as it used to live in my grandfather’s office of his architecture firm. I can remember curling up on it as a kid to watch him sketch. Of course, back then it was bright orange, but the memory remains the same. I don’t think anyone realized how beautiful it was, so I’ve always felt like I scored when I inherited it – in more ways than one, obviously. I also love the white lacquer cube that our TV sits on. It graced my mom's San Fran studio in her John Wheatman days and I think it's as great now as it was 35 years ago. The coffee table is vintage Paul McCobb, the acrylic and glass bar cart is courtesy of Craigslist, the porcelain acorns and giant strawberry are “on the road” finds, and the Wegner chairs were purchased for a steal at a local sale. Let’s see, what else…Oh, I also included pics of the spare bedroom, mostly so you could see the new light fixture. (Also a Craigslist find). Though not quite at home in the condo just yet, the room is still a work in progress and I have hope. The photo over the bed is new too, thanks to a shot I took in Mexico and had Kodak Gallery blow up and make metallic. And lastly, I’m showing you my row of old-school family photos, just because. I’m a firm believer that a home should be filled with everything you love, and well, I love each and every one of those pictures.

Deep breath. Okay, that’s a lot of talky for one day and I hope you’re not bored out of your head. If I lost you, come back tomorrow for some Frugal Friday fun, AND a great giveaway. Brew ya.

*Please don't judge me for my sad Ikea throw pillows. I have new ones in the works but the room needed some color in the interim. Duh.

Take That, Bear Grylls

A lot of people lost in the desert would pray for water. Me? I’ll trade H2O for Prada any day of the week. Too bad this store is only a mirage, or rather, an art installation in Marfa, Texas. I’m sure you’ve all seen it before, but I keep coming back for more. The epitome of true luxury coupled with the raw, stark landscape. It kind of embodies how I feel about this gorgeous driftwood table. It’s a piece you always hear someone say, “Oh, I could totally build that.” and yet, not so much. Like the time when I was 10 and told my artist uncle “I could paint that.” Riggggght. But I digress. I think a photo of the Prada Marfa would be so chic in a lavish living room. You know, in a “Hey, I’m stylish, but don’t take myself too seriously” kind of way. I’d buy one, but you know, I take myself very seriously. Oh and my living room isn’t so much lavish as, well, not. Whatevs. I'd still choose Prada over water. That's gotta mean something, right?

Deep-Seated Struggle

You’d think with my love of mid-century furniture I would gravitate towards low, streamlined couches. Not so much. No matter how gorgeous I think those lines are, I like my sofas with a little more cushion for the pushin’, if you get my drift. At the end of a long day, I’d much rather sink into a sofa than practice perfect posture thank you very much. Truth is, there are a lot of things I’d give up in pursuit of good style. Comfort isn’t one of them. EeeGAD.

Now Casting: Goldmember

If I never had to worry about coffee or wine stains, dirty shoes, pen marks or desert dust of any kind, I may rock this look. I love how tailored the piping on the couch looks while the lines keep it inviting. Oh and the chairs on casters have me swooning, and not just for the convenience factor. They’re pretty great in and of themselves, but the fact that they would speed up a trip to the kitchen/bar/TiVo certainly doesn’t hurt. Hey, don’t judge me, I’m on a tight schedule. (You know you were thinking it.)

Haunted by a House

What are your thoughts of beauty in sadness? When I first saw this collage wall, I found it very interesting but also incredibly depressing. Maybe it’s the colors, or the specific images, or maybe it’s just me, but there’s something a little creepy about the look in its entirety. Then again, I saved it to use in a board so it must be doin’ something right. You know, like Joaquin Phoenix. You don't really want to like him, but well, you just do.

Toast of the Town

There are many things I love about our condo. To name a few, it’s cozy, easy to clean and prevents a lot of, ahem, unwelcome guests. Then again, there are things I’m unable to do because of limited space. You know, like have any privacy, or try P90X in my living room. Not that I WOULD do P09X, but it’d be nice to have the option. A more realistic desire, however, is to have a great bar. A glorious built-in complete with wine cooler, crystal highballs and glass shelves. Oh, and a great view, and maybe a swanky couch to enjoy it from. That’s not asking too much, right? Rigggght.

Cheap Thrills

It’s no surprise I love the thrill of the hunt. Scouring Craigslist, eBay or Last Chance for the great fashion/furniture/accessory find of the year is a favorite pastime of mine. HSN, however, is not a place I frequent for such finds. Note to self…it should be. I’ve mentioned Nate Berkus’ great line for them before, but that’s when I thought it couldn’t get any better. (Seriously, $29.95 for a decent pillow is pretty reasonable.) And then? Dun, dun, dun, those pillows went on clearance. For $7.95 and $5.00. News of this magnitude is dangerous ground for me. Usually my heart starts racing, palms begin to sweat, and before I know it, I’ve purchased 50 pillows in each color because the price is just too good to pass up. This time, however, I’m reigning in my crazy and passing the deal on to you. Because let’s be honest, everyone deserves to save a little coin these days, and nobody likes a perfectly good guest room turned harem. Unless of course, you’re into that kind of stuff, in which case might I also suggest this pillow…

Cover Your Bases

And your books for that matter. In a perfect world, I’d have floor-to-ceiling windows that opened to a huge patio overlooking the water. I’d have gorgeous hardwood floors, a shiny white kitchen (see yesterday’s post) and all my book covers would be designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith. I’d also never be tired, I’d have Tina Fey on speed dial, and my jeans would always fit despite living on red wine, French bread and large amounts of cheese. The end.

In the Mood for Mod

I can't explain it, but my love of mid-century modern furniture runs VERY deep. My parents' house is filled with the most amazing "Palm Springs" pieces that always seem right at home in their space. It's a look that's harder to pull of in my condo, so I've taken to mixing styles in order to be true to the original structure and my mid-century love. If my husband could stomach pink, you'd better believe we'd be rockin' those sheets by Rubie Green, and thanks to the living room image from Oh So Beautiful Paper, I'm thinking of redecorating my living room. Joy!
